The Riserva Gabrio Pinot Noir from Serragghia is one of the most unusual Pinot expressions in the world. Made by Gabrio and Giotto Bini on the volcanic island of Pantelleria, it pushes the limits of what Pinot can be in such a wild, sun-baked place. Here, volcanic soils, sea winds, and amphora fermentations give the grape a voice that’s raw, textural, and unlike anything from Burgundy.
In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby, edging toward garnet. Aromas are intense yet layered — red cherry and plum meet floral tones, with earthy smoke, ash, and a faint herbal lift. On the palate, there’s a firm tannic grip, surprising for Pinot, but balanced by volcanic minerality and a bright line of acidity. The fruit turns more savory with time, carrying into a long finish of earth, spice, and red berries.
What makes this wine remarkable is the process. Grapes are macerated with skins in amphorae, fermented naturally, and bottled unfiltered, with no sulfur added. The result is a Pinot that feels both ancient and avant-garde: dense in structure, alive in texture, and full of island energy.
Production is tiny, bottles are rare, and collectors chase them — but beyond the cult status, the Riserva Gabrio is a wine that makes you rethink Pinot Noir entirely. Serious, striking, and deeply rooted in Pantelleria’s volcanic terroir, it’s a wine for those who love their reds with both power and poetry.
